- The Mount Rushmore Society (Society) donated $35,000 to the National Park Service to extend Mount Rushmore National Memorial's Evening Lighting Ceremony. Historically, the Evening Lighting Ceremony, which includes a ranger program, the "Freedom: America's Lasting Legacy" movie and lighting of the sculpture, has been held from Mother's Day until the end of September. Due to sequestration, park officials had considered shortening the season. The Society offered monetary support so that the ceremony could go on as in the past. It will begin on May 12, 2013, during National Tourism Week. Read More.
